Methodology
The AskMaldives Fit Map™
Eight dimensions that decide whether a Maldives resort suits a particular traveller. We score every recommendation against all eight and show you the working.
There is no best Maldives resort. There is only the resort that best fits a particular traveller, trip and budget, which is why we do not publish a ranking. The Fit Map turns what you tell us into criteria that are specific to this destination, then scores what is actually available for your dates against them.
The two answers you give at the end of the Specialist questions decide the weighting. A dimension you called out as mattering most counts for three times an ordinary one, and every explanation you read afterwards is written against those two answers rather than against a house view of what a good island looks like.
The eight dimensions
- 01
Island & Atmosphere
Two islands with identical photography can produce completely different weeks. Scale and atmosphere are what travellers most often misjudge.
Derived from
Resort style, location type, descriptive tags and the property description. - 02
Water & Marine
A house reef is either there or it is not, and it changes the shape of every day. Generic hotel filters do not capture it.
Derived from
Facilities list and property description (house reef, snorkelling, dive centre, lagoon). - 03
Villa Fit
Overwater, beach, private pool, family configuration: usually the largest single line on the bill.
Derived from
Room names returned for your dates (overwater, beach, pool, family configurations). - 04
Dining & Board
Board basis moves the total more than the room rate does, and it is fixed at booking rather than on arrival.
Derived from
The board basis on the live rate, plus restaurant and bar facilities. - 05
Transfer Ease
Transfers add hours and real cost to a Maldives trip, and seaplanes do not fly after dark. It is the most under-weighted factor in Maldives planning.
Derived from
Straight-line distance from the resort's coordinates to Velana International. - 06
Travel-Party Fit
An adults-only island is wrong for a family, and a busy kids club is wrong for a honeymoon. Neither shows up in a star rating.
Derived from
Facilities and policies covering children, childcare and adults-only operation. - 07
Budget Reality
The room rate is not the trip cost. We compare against the live total for your dates and say plainly what sits outside it.
Derived from
The live total for your dates against the budget you gave us. - 08
Service & Style
Style and standard vary widely inside the same price band. Guest sentiment tells you more than the star count.
Derived from
Star rating, guest rating, resort style and guest sentiment.
What we do when we cannot tell
Every dimension is scored from live provider data. Where that data does not support a judgement, the dimension reads Not enough data. It is never filled in with an average, and never quietly counted as a low score. A resort with three unverified dimensions is shown as exactly that.
Transfer Ease is the one dimension we infer rather than read: we estimate it from the resort’s distance to Malé, because transfer type is not published in the booking data. It is labelled as an estimate everywhere it appears, and you should confirm the transfer and its cost with the resort before you commit.
Resort transfers are never included in the rates we display. In the Maldives that is a substantial cost, so we state it on every recommendation rather than letting a total look smaller than it is.
What the Fit Map is not
- It is not a quality score. A resort can score 92 for you and 40 for the next traveller, on identical data.
- It is not first-hand experience. We do not claim to have stayed anywhere.
- It is not influenced by commercial relationships. No resort can pay to rank higher, see how we recommend.
