What Maldives Resort Prices Really Include

The short answer

A quoted nightly rate typically covers the villa and, depending on the rate, breakfast. It does not cover the transfer, and it may or may not have taxes and service charge folded in depending on how the rate was displayed to you.

Before you compare two resorts, get both to the same basis: villa plus board plus taxes plus transfer, for your exact dates and party. Rates that look a long way apart frequently converge once transfers are added, and rates that look close can diverge sharply.

What the nightly rate covers

The rate buys the villa for the night, and whatever board basis is attached to it. Most rates are quoted on bed-and-breakfast terms unless stated otherwise, which on a resort island leaves every lunch, dinner and drink as a separate purchase — see Maldives meal plans explained.

It normally also covers the ordinary use of the island: pools, beaches, gym, non-motorised watersports at many resorts, and the house reef. What it does not cover is anything with a staff member attached — diving, excursions, spa, motorised watersports, childcare beyond the standard club hours.

One frequent misreading: a rate described as including a 'complimentary' upgrade, dinner or spa credit is normally a rate with those things priced in. That is not a criticism; it just means comparing it to a bare rate elsewhere is not comparing like with like.

The taxes and charges layer

Three separate items are applied to Maldivian resort stays, and they compound in a specific order: service charge is calculated on the bill, then goods and services tax is applied, and green tax is a flat per-person, per-night amount that sits outside the percentages.

The percentages apply to spending as well as to the room, so they also land on every meal, drink, excursion and spa treatment you buy on the island. Over a week that is a meaningful sum in its own right.

Transfers: the line people forget

Transfers are charged per person, each way, and are quoted separately from accommodation everywhere. For a seaplane resort this is routinely a four-figure sum for two people return. For a speedboat island near the capital it is a fraction of that. This single variable does more to separate two otherwise similar trips than villa category does.

It also means a cheaper resort further out can end up costing more than a pricier one close in. Comparing room rates without transfers attached is the most common budgeting error in Maldives planning, and it consistently misleads in the same direction.

The extras that surprise people

None of these are hidden in a deceptive sense — they are all published. They surprise people because they are not part of the number that made them book.

• Drinks, which on an island with no competing bar are priced accordingly and accumulate faster than most people expect.
• Signature restaurants, which usually carry a supplement even on all-inclusive.
• In-villa dining and sandbank or beach dinners, almost always a per-person surcharge.
• Diving and excursions, never included in any board basis, and frequently the largest discretionary line on a longer stay.
• Spa, priced at international resort levels with service charge and tax on top.
• Festive supplements over Christmas and New Year — compulsory gala dinners charged per person, sometimes substantial, often with minimum-stay requirements attached.
• Airport hotel in Malé, if a late arrival means you cannot reach a seaplane resort until the next morning.

Building a real total before you book

Work in this order and the number stops moving: villa and board for the exact dates, plus taxes and service charge, plus transfers for the exact party, plus a realistic estimate of drinks and excursions. That last item is the one people leave out, and on a seven-night stay it is rarely small.

Then sanity-check the shape of it. If transfers are approaching the accommodation cost, you are paying a lot to reach the island and it is worth asking whether a closer resort would give you a better week for the same money. What this means for comparing resorts

Two resorts quoting similar nightly rates can produce totals that differ by a large margin once transfers, board and festive supplements are attached. The resort with the higher headline rate is quite often the cheaper trip.

This is also why 'cheapest Maldives resort' is not a useful search. The cheapest room on a distant island reached by seaplane, on bed and breakfast, is frequently more expensive in total than a mid-priced speedboat island on half board — and a worse holiday for a short stay.
