The Maldives in November: The Wettest Month on the Record

The short answer

Is November a good time to visit the Maldives?

November is the wettest month in the Maldives on the baseline record: about 231mm over thirteen days at Malé, more than September's 198mm. Rates are already climbing toward the festive peak. The last week improves as the northeast monsoon establishes, which is the part of the month worth booking.

November is transition in the Maldives, priced as shoulder season, with islands at their moderate. Malé records about 231mm of rain over 13 days, a mean daily high of 30°C and a sea at 29°C. What follows is what those numbers change about a booking, and where they disagree with the way November is usually described.

November weather in numbers

These are Maldives Meteorological Service baseline normals for Malé (Hulhulé), the central-atoll reference station. The archipelago runs roughly 800km north to south across the Equator, and the far southern atolls receive materially more annual rain on a calendar that runs closer to the opposite of this one. If your shortlist sits in Addu Atoll, read the monthly figures here as a central-atoll baseline rather than a forecast for your resort.

The fact most Maldives calendars get wrong

November records about 231mm of rain at Malé on the Maldives Meteorological Service baseline normals. That is more than September's 198mm, more than October's 194mm, and more than any other month of the year. December, at about 218mm, is second.

This is worth stating plainly because the popular framing — wet season May to October, dry season November to April — puts November on the dry side of the line. The record does not. November is the single wettest month, and the reason it reads as dry-season is that it is the month the northeast monsoon begins to arrive, not the month it has arrived.

Rain days tell a slightly different story: thirteen in November against fifteen in September and October. So November's rain falls on fewer days in larger quantities. That is genuinely useful — fewer interrupted afternoons — but it does not make November drier, and it certainly does not make it a dry-season month.

Why November is the worst value in the calendar

Put the rainfall beside the rate card and November is the weakest combination the Maldivian year offers: the highest rainfall on the record, at prices already climbing toward the festive peak. October is drier and cheaper. September is drier and much cheaper. February is far drier at a comparable price to late November.

This is not an argument against travelling in November — plenty of travellers have fixed dates — but it is an argument against choosing November, and against the reasoning that usually produces it, which is that November is 'the start of the dry season' and therefore a safe bet at shoulder prices.

If November is fixed, the decisions that matter are exposure and cover: a sheltered lagoon, a villa with genuinely usable shade or an indoor space, and a transfer that does not depend on a single daylight seaplane slot. Those choices do more for a November week than the month's reputation suggests they should need to.

The last ten days are a different proposition

The northeast monsoon establishes through late November, and the improvement is real: settling wind, calming sea state, and visibility beginning its climb toward the dry-season range. The festive surcharge does not start until around 15 December.

That gives a genuine window — roughly the last ten days of November into the first ten of December — where conditions are trending toward dry season and rates have not yet reached festive level. It is narrower and less reliable than late March, which is the dry season's equivalent window, but it is the best November has.

It also coincides with the close of the Hanifaru season in Baa Atoll, so a late-November trip can catch the last of the mantas against improving water. That combination does not exist in any other month.

Sea, visibility and marine life in November

The transition back toward the northeast monsoon. Early November keeps wet-season wind and swell; conditions and visibility generally begin improving through the final ten days.

The close of the Hanifaru Bay manta season, which runs roughly to the end of the month. Whale sharks in South Ari continue year-round. Late November begins the shift toward dry-season clarity.

What November costs, and how busy it is

Climbing through the month toward the festive surcharge that starts around 15 December. Early November is closest to low season; late November is priced as pre-peak.

Building. The winter-sun market starts arriving and the last weeks of November are materially busier than the first.

Who November suits

Every month in the Maldives is the right month for somebody and the wrong month for somebody else. November is a good choice for the travellers below, and a poor one for the reader described underneath them.

  • Travellers who can book the last ten days, when conditions improve before the festive surcharge lands
  • Divers who want the closing weeks of manta season with dry-season clarity beginning to return
  • Anyone whose dates are fixed in November and who chooses a sheltered lagoon accordingly
  • Travellers who want pre-festive December conditions without December pricing

The trade-off

Pick another month if…

You are choosing November on the assumption it is drier than September — it is not, by about 33mm — or you are price-sensitive and could take October instead.

The AskMaldives Verdict

Think twice if
You are choosing November on the assumption it is drier than September — it is not, by about 33mm — or you are price-sensitive and could take October instead.
Main reason to choose it
The last ten days pair improving northeast-monsoon conditions with the close of manta season, before the festive surcharge lands.
Main compromise
It is the wettest month on the baseline record, at rates already climbing — the weakest value combination in the year.

FAQs

Is November a good time to visit the Maldives?

Less than its reputation suggests. November is the wettest month on the Malé baseline normals — about 231mm, more than September — at rates already climbing toward the festive peak. The last ten days are the part worth booking.

Is November the wettest month in the Maldives?

Yes, by total rainfall: about 231mm at Malé, against September's 198mm and October's 194mm. By rain days November is lower, at thirteen against fifteen, so the rain falls on fewer days in larger amounts.

Is November dry season in the Maldives?

It is the transition into it rather than part of it. The northeast monsoon establishes through the second half of the month, which is why November is often labelled dry season despite carrying the year's highest rainfall.

Is October better than November in the Maldives?

On the record, yes, on both counts. October records about 194mm against November's 231mm, and holds close to the year's lowest rates while November's are climbing toward the festive peak.

Can you see manta rays in the Maldives in November?

Yes, in the closing weeks. The Hanifaru Bay season in Baa Atoll runs roughly to the end of November, and late November pairs the last of it with water that is starting to clear.
