The short answer
Is December a good time to visit the Maldives?
December splits in two. Until about the 14th it is pre-peak: about 218mm of rain on the month's record but improving conditions, at rates below the festive level. From roughly 15 December the surcharge lands and can more than double a nightly rate, with compulsory gala dinners on top.
December is transition in the Maldives, priced as peak season, with islands at their busiest. Malé records about 218mm of rain over 11 days, a mean daily high of 29.9°C and a sea at 28°C. What follows is what those numbers change about a booking, and where they disagree with the way December is usually described.
December weather in numbers
These are Maldives Meteorological Service baseline normals for Malé (Hulhulé), the central-atoll reference station. The archipelago runs roughly 800km north to south across the Equator, and the far southern atolls receive materially more annual rain on a calendar that runs closer to the opposite of this one. If your shortlist sits in Addu Atoll, read the monthly figures here as a central-atoll baseline rather than a forecast for your resort.

The 15 December line
No date in the Maldivian year moves a price like the middle of December. From roughly 15 December to 7 January, resorts apply a festive surcharge that can more than double the nightly rate, and most attach a compulsory gala dinner — frequently to both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve — that is charged per person whether or not you want to attend.
Before that line, December is a shoulder month with improving weather. After it, December is the most expensive product the Maldives sells. The weather difference across the line is small and generally favours the later half; the price difference is the largest in the calendar.
This makes December the clearest booking decision on the site: if your dates are free, book 1-14 December and take the same trip for a fraction of the money. If they are not, budget for the gala charges explicitly at the point of booking, because they are the single most common source of a Maldives bill that exceeds expectations. What Maldives prices really include covers what a quoted rate does and does not carry.
| 1-14 December | 15 December - 7 January | |
|---|---|---|
| Rate band | Pre-peak | Festive surcharge, often 100%+ over base |
| Gala dinners | None | Usually compulsory, charged per person |
| Island occupancy | Moderate | Fullest of the year |
| Weather | Improving, transitional | Improving, closer to dry season |
| Booking lead time | 60-90 days typical | 180+ days for pool overwater |
December's weather is better than its number
December records about 218mm at Malé — the second-highest monthly total of the year, behind November. Taken alone, that number makes December look like a poor weather bet, and it misrepresents the month.
The reason is that the total is front-loaded. December is the month the northeast monsoon takes hold, and conditions improve across it: early December carries transitional weather while late December is heading toward dry-season behaviour. Rain days are eleven, the lowest of any month since March, which reflects that improvement better than the total does.
So December is the inverse of April. April starts dry and ends wet; December starts wet and ends dry. Both are transition months where the average describes neither half, and in both the useful question is which fortnight rather than which month.
Booking the festive fortnight properly
If the dates are fixed, three things decide whether the money is well spent. First, lead time: overwater villas with private pools over the festive period book 180 days out and further, and late bookers take what is left rather than what they wanted.
Second, the gala structure. Ask which nights carry compulsory dinners, what they cost per adult and per child, and whether they apply to guests on all-inclusive plans — they frequently do, on top of the plan. An all-inclusive booking is not protection against them, which is a point Maldives all-inclusive explained sets out in detail.
Third, transfers. Seaplane capacity is at its tightest over the festive fortnight and operations remain daylight-only. A late arrival on 23 December with a seaplane leg can mean an unplanned airport-hotel night. A speedboat-reachable resort in North Malé Atoll or South Malé Atoll removes that risk, and seaplane vs speedboat covers what else the choice changes.
Sea, visibility and marine life in December
Improving through the month as the northeast monsoon takes hold. Early December still carries transitional conditions; by late December lagoons are calming and visibility is heading toward its February best.
The Hanifaru manta season has closed. Whale sharks in South Ari are present as they are year-round, and improving clarity makes the surface searches that find them more practical.
What December costs, and how busy it is
The sharpest divide in the Maldivian calendar. From about 15 December to 7 January the festive surcharge can more than double base rates, and most resorts attach a compulsory gala dinner to Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve or both.
The first two weeks are moderate; the festive fortnight is the fullest period of the year. Seaplane slots, restaurant times and excursion capacity are all constrained from about the 20th.
Who December suits
Every month in the Maldives is the right month for somebody and the wrong month for somebody else. December is a good choice for the travellers below, and a poor one for the reader described underneath them.
- Travellers who can book 1-14 December and take improving weather at pre-festive rates
- Families and couples locked to the Christmas and New Year holidays who budget for the surcharge deliberately
- Divers who want returning dry-season clarity without February pricing, in the first half of the month
- Anyone who values the festive-period atmosphere enough to pay explicitly for it
The trade-off
Pick another month if…
You are price-sensitive and your dates are movable — the same resort in early December, or in late March, costs a fraction of the festive fortnight for comparable or better weather.
The AskMaldives Verdict
- Best for
- Travellers who can book 1-14 December and take improving weather at pre-festive rates
- Think twice if
- You are price-sensitive and your dates are movable — the same resort in early December, or in late March, costs a fraction of the festive fortnight for comparable or better weather.
- Main reason to choose it
- Conditions improve across the month, and the first fortnight buys that improvement at pre-festive rates.
- Main compromise
- From roughly the 15th the festive surcharge can more than double the rate, with compulsory gala dinners charged on top.
- Do this next
- Compare December against the month either side of it, then search live rates for both and let the total decide.

Ask the Maldives SpecialistFAQs
Is December a good time to visit the Maldives?
The first half is; the second half is good and very expensive. Conditions improve across the month as the northeast monsoon establishes, but from about 15 December a festive surcharge applies that can more than double the nightly rate.
When does the Maldives festive surcharge start?
Typically around 15 December, running to about 7 January. Most resorts also attach compulsory gala dinners to Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve or both, charged per person and frequently payable even on all-inclusive plans.
Does it rain a lot in the Maldives in December?
The monthly total is high — about 218mm, second only to November — but it is front-loaded, and rain days are eleven, the fewest since March. Conditions improve steadily across the month.
Is early December cheaper in the Maldives?
Substantially. The first two weeks price as pre-peak shoulder while the weather is already improving. It is the clearest date-shift saving in the Maldivian calendar for anyone whose dates are not fixed to the holidays.
How far ahead should I book the Maldives for Christmas?
For an overwater villa with a private pool over the festive fortnight, 180 days out is normal and further is common. Seaplane capacity is also at its tightest, so early booking protects the transfer as well as the villa.
Compare with another month
- The Maldives in November, 231mm, shoulder season
- The Maldives in January, 114mm, peak season
- All twelve months, side by side
